I sincerely hope the "Joel Stein" who authored this piece IS NOT the same Joel Stein in the media a few years ago in New York; convicted of beating his 8 year old daughter to death.
If it is; I appeal to a moderator to delete the entire post.

This is hilarious; thanks for the good laugh.
Unfortunately; it will only mean something to those who live on both USA coasts.
New York and Los Angeles will have a hearty laugh over this; Middle America will have to try to figure it out.
and not just everyone "could" run for office.
you need money, exposure, the media, influence, etc.
but if you could, if it was even a longshot possibility, would you ever consider running for office?
Upside/down
yes, you are right,
Min; sorry; did not mean to hijack your thread ( #$&%?!; excuse me, but I am from New York).
BTT; The answer would still be NO

hey Min,
Aside from Public service politics....
my recollections of being a JW; with all usual "good relationship with Jehovah" nonsense ....
( gesture of being ill)
was that there was SO MUCH POLITICING; the social heiarchy alone where i grew up (Huntington Congregation in Long Island NY)would make your head spin. My father was an elder so I suppose we were close to the top of the heap..... myself and 2 sisters were full time pioneers; which was continually comforting to my socially consciencious parents...cousin was the Bethel dentist; etc. These were considered, at the time, solid JW credentials. And I KNOW that those credentials made a difference in how we were percieved; and what we could and could not do.
There is a difference.
In a very big way; this was perhaps good training for me. When I finally grew up ( and out of the JW influences) and entered the REAL world; working in NYC, I was able to handle myself in business politics.
"Hey, I did my time with the Jehovahs Witnesses--I KNOW how to be a #@$%?!"
The good New York line ...."Don't $^%#*&@?! with me!"
i continually battle with my emotional feelings as the daughter of a devout jw and my beliefs as a reasonable educated individual.. problems arise when my mother makes some sort of contact with me via email and always has to put in some dig such as "since you have turned your back on jehovah's people" and then i get furious because if god does have people on earth i am sure the red cross volunteers would be on the list, not the jws i know.
the statements she makes always irritate me and i sometimes choose to defend my beliefs, my morality, my truth vs her truth.
i spend time writing not only factful but sometimes emotional charged testimony about what it means to be godly.. once i make my point it opens up a can of worms and i get bombarded with emails or magazines from her trying to make her point.
it sounds like the JW thing is just making an existing problem worse.
Be easy on yourself; you cannot convince her to stop preaching to you. Take it in stride...be kind to yourself and in your reactions to her "theocratic rants"....
in the end you still have to look yourself in the mirror.
You cannot just walk away from your mother; no matter HOW MUCH she is preaching to you.....so just limit your interactions ( sounds like you have done that) and go out and do something nice for yourself.
since position is everything to most of these under-educated, mentally ill despots (i know there are a few "good" ones), any "problem" is sure to be hidden away.
as we all know only the stupid and naive (the truly "good" dub's) "come forward", and get the "loving" help from da bro's.. .
since most problems are hidden (purposefully) they are never solved.
HAH!
...thanks for my chuckle of the day...
i was brought up in the 'truth' for many years until i was 20 or thereabouts and now being on the outside looking in i see not only jw's for what they really are but i believe i see religion for what it really is too.. consider this point, and this reminds me of a song written by alanis morrisette entitled, forgiven which is a pretty cool stab at religion itself if you read the lyrics closely...one part of the lyrics is 'we all had our reasons to be there'.
if you came into the truth, consider the reasons why, what were the circumstances of your life...were you searching for something.
even if they were brought up in it...consider the reasons why their parents started to believe.
like other posters, I was raised as a JW and did not know any other way of life.....
I have sad memories of childhood. But lucky for me I managed to escape in my early 20s and lead a productive "normal" life.
never looked back; no regrets.

yes, a shaky foundation and the INSECURITY OF OTHERS.....

no. not interested in the political game.
did too much of it as a JW....
throughout my life there have always been things i've wanted to do, places to go, things to experience.
when i was 14 i read nat geo's articles on robin graham's circumnavigation aboard dove and dove ii, so i wanted to learn to sail and sail the s pacific.
when i was 25 i began sailing, then racing.
Brenda,
good for you. Your list is GREAT and I cheer you on for your abilities!
I also race sailboats; 12 meters, having enjoyed that sport for years. Ericson 39 and C&C 40.
As a young ( 14 years also) Jw kid, I also remember Robin Grahms adventures sailing across the globe in National Geographic. It impressed me then; and it impresses me years later ( how could his parents have allowed it?)
That is now the last unfulfilled event in my life. When my kids are grown ( and college is payed up; I might add!) It is my fantasy to sail around the world. My wife has already said she will not come with me. ( landlubber). I may just have to be content to sail around Long Island sound and come back home to her on weekends!
regards, Frank
